Aikido Kanji

Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art that emphasizes harmony. You will learn to accept the incoming energy of an attack and blend with the attacker to control the situation, avoiding injury and bringing peaceful resolution to potential conflict.

Aikido teaches you to become stronger and more flexible, both physically and mentally. The training process brings challenges that equip you to deal more smoothly with lifes everyday difficulties. You will gain confidence and a greater awareness of yourself and the world around you.

Skill in Aikido is not based on size or strength, therefore it is studied by men and women of all ages and levels of physical ability. Beginners are always welcome and you will be amazed at what you can learn in even one class!

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Aikido Taught:

Aikido techniques are taught in a gentle and smooth manner. The program is designed to provide an opportunity to safely explore all aspects of this dynamic martial art. Aikido practice initially emphasizes correct mechanical form and precise movements. Once proper movement is ingrained, connecting with one’s partner becomes the focus. From there, timing becomes natural, and smooth harmonious techniques begin to emerge.

What types of techniques are taught in Aikido:

In Aikido we grow and learn by not only studying the application of joint locks, throws and pins, but also by learning how to receive these techniques from our partners safely.

Who Can Learn Aikido:

Skill in Aikido is not based on size or strength, therefore it is studied by men and women of all ages and levels of physical ability. Classes are conducted in a manner that allows students to train at their own pace.

What to Wear:

Aikido is regularly practiced in a gi, which is a durable, traditional Japanese uniform that does not impede movement. For your first one or two months of practice, you are welcome to wear something comfortable and modest that you can move freely in such as sweat-clothes. Please, no jewelry, perfume, cologne, blue jeans or shorts on the mat. If you continue training with us, we ask you to wear a standard practice gi. We can assist you with selecting and purchasing a gi.

About the Aikido Association of America

The goal of the AAA, as defined by its late founder Fumio Toyoda Shihan (master teacher), is to raise the quality of American Aikido instruction to its highest level. Towards this end, the AAA emphasizes strong Aikido technique, legitimate instructors, and clear teaching methodology. The organization provides support and guidance to its instructors, members, and affiliated dojo. It offers standardized test requirements, training seminars and camps (local, regional, and national), and instructor training and certification. Toyoda Shihan, known for his powerful and dynamic Aikido as well as for his unique and effective teaching methodology, would give personal attention to students of all levels. His personal goal, and the guiding vision of Aikido Association of America, was to promote the art of Aikido. Toyoda Shihan was succeeded by his son, Tatsuo Toyoda Sensei.
